The state of your union!
by Pastor Doug Cox
I watched President Trump deliver his state of the union speech listing all the accomplishments of his administration for the American people. He declared the ‘state of the union is stronger than ever before’. However, by watching the antics of the Speaker of the House who was seated right behind Him I don’t think she agreed. She grimaced and muttered to herself all through the speech and at the end, ripped the speech in two. I don’t think she likes the President. Today I don’t want to talk about politics, but I do want to talk about the state of your union with Christ. That’s the thing that counts. That’s what is most important in everyday life.
Last Sunday we partook of Holy Communion after I shared a message titled “A Better Covenant, Better Promises and a Better Life”. We looked at how there are three elements to a Biblical Covenant. First, there are God’s Promises. Second, there is a blood sacrifice and third, there is a sign. One of God’s Promises concerning the New Covenant is found in Romans 10:12-13. The Apostle Paul writes that “…there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him, for whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” That is an amazing promise. It is made possible by the second part of the New Covenant, the blood of Jesus.
The Old Covenant had blood sacrifices, but they were insufficient to bring man into union with God. The writer of Hebrews says “for the law…. can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect…. for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” (Hebrews 10:1,4) In other words, the blood of animals can’t bring man into union with God but, the good news is, the blood of Jesus can. It’s important for us to believe the declaration in God’s Word that says “…this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God… for by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” (Heb 10:12-14).
To ratify this union of our belief in God’s Promise and faith in Jesus blood God He gives us a sign. It’s the sign of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13 says “in Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.”
It’s settled! You believe the promise, you receive by faith the power of Jesus blood and God sends the seal of the union, the Holy Spirit and life can get better from there because we are free to live in relationship with God who desires to help us in every aspect of our life, problems and all.
