A personalized coming of the Lord
Pastor Doug Cox
Last week in our message from the series “Joy No Matter What,” we looked at how the Apostle Paul said it wasn’t tedious (or a burden) to him to write the same things to the church again. (See Philippians 3:1) I made the point then that it shouldn’t be a burden for us to read through the Bible and look at different passages of scripture over and over either. When you do that, you can get more revelation and insight from rereading.
I have been reading lately in John chapters 12 through 16 to see what Jesus said about the Holy Spirit and His ministry. So, this morning I was looking at John 14:25-28 and I saw some new light in it. Jesus said to His disciples “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.”
So notice how Jesus said because He was going away (to the cross, the grave and then heaven) He would then be able to send the Holy Spirit who would teach, bring things to remembrance, give His peace and so on to them. In other words, the Holy Spirit when He comes, will do everything that Jesus has already been doing.
Now let’s look at John 14:16 Again it is Jesus speaking and He says “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another (Greek allos) Helper, that He may abide with you forever.” It goes on to say how the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, that the world cannot receive Him and how the Holy Spirit was dwelling with the disciples as Jesus was teaching them …but … (drum roll please) He will be in them.
So it’s very interesting how the word ‘another’ in verse 16 means so much more than we think. It means One besides Jesus. It means One in addition to Jesus and One just like Him as well. So, if you are really saved you are somewhat familiar with the Holy Spirit. He came into your life when you were born again. You probably experienced Him lead, teach and empower you in the things of the Lord. He is dwelling within.
So as I looked at John 14:28 again and read where Jesus said “I am going away and coming back to you” it became apparent to me that I have already experienced a coming of the Lord. If you are a Christian, you have too. I (we) are double blessed because the “allos” the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, the One just like Jesus, the One in addition to Jesus lives in me right now. So as I await His Second Coming, I rejoice in His first coming into my life when I was born again, through the Holy Spirit. Jesus is my Intercessor in heaven and He through Another One just like Him, is making Intercession for me right now from within my heart, by the Holy Spirit. I encourage you to pray and ask the Lord for a fresh touch from the Holy Spirit and a new empowering.
