This week in our Simple Truths Bible Study Pastor Jana shared about “Faithfulness in Service”. She encouraged us that the Bible gives us direction for success in our lives and that the work and service that we do should be done to the glory of the Lord. Colossians 3:23 admonishes us to “work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Even if we are not in our dream job or desired service position we are to work as though we are doing our work for the Lord and not only for people (or a paycheck).
The Bible is very strong on this topic, in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 it says, “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat.” In Genesis 2 after God had created Adam and Eve, He gave them instructions that they were to tend and care for the garden. It was an amazing, beautiful place but it required work and maintenance. Many people today are unwilling to work hard and have developed an attitude that they should be handed everything. But God disagrees, His original plan was for people to work.
When we choose to serve and work hard it is a benefit not only to us personally, but to our families, our companies or employers, our community and others. There is a difference between leisure and laziness. The Bible has quite a bit to say about being lazy. Proverbs 6:9 “But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? 10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest– 11 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.” Proverbs 13: 4 “Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.” Proverbs 21:25 “Despite their desires, the lazy will come to ruin, for their hands refuse to work.”
When we choose the right attitude about our service and work and make the decision that we will do it to glorify the Lord and that we are working for Him we will open the door to blessing. When we understand who we are serving it will help us have the right attitude. Who are you serving and working for?
