Living in a world that is out of control and full of negativity and fear can become overwhelming to us as sojourners in this life. The bible states that this earth is not our home it is a temporary residence for us. However, as we live this life on earth we need all the help we can get to live in peace and stability. The Lord has graciously provided what we need for the journey we are on.
Our success in this life comes as we place our dependence on the Lord. Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) If we are not to be overcome when the storms of life come our way we will need the word of God as our anchor. If we are not anchored in the word of God when the storm hits we will end up collapsing under the pressure of the storm. (Matthew 7:24-27) Jesus does not promise us a life without trials, winds, and floodwaters but He does, however, leave us promises in His word to prevail in the storm.
David was willing to face the giant Goliath you could say that Goliath was Davids’s storm. The story in 1 Samuel teaches us some valuable lessons for overcoming storms and adversity in this life. We can learn from David that he put his confidence in God. (1 Samuel 17:37) The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the Lion and bear will rescue me from this Philistine! David had a personal relationship with God, he talked with Him, worshipped Him and drew his strength from Him. Doing this gave David the confidence he needed when the storms of life were coming at him. We can see that Davids trust in God brought him victory however it wasn’t without a battle.
The question is are we willing to be like David? Are we willing to take the time to build our spiritual life through communion and worship so that when we are faced with adversity our reliance is completely on the Lord? In order to not be overcome and discouraged in this life, we must like David make the time to build wisely. As we do this we will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock, and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall for it was founded on the rock. (Matthew7:24-25)
