The devil’s flattery and your response!
By Pastor Doug Cox
In reading this important verse from Daniel 11 we see the need for every believer to make a commitment to daily renew their mind in the word of God. The messenger’s words to Daniel are both a warning and an encouragement to every generation. He says “Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits. (Daniel 11:32). The one who corrupted with flattery was Antiochus Epiphanes (AE) some 175 years before Christ. The spirit motivating him was the devil.
AE was doing everything he could to destroy the Jewish faith. I can see him patting the backs of the flaky Jews who turned their backs on God and their people to save their own skin. I can see (AE) telling them how important they were and how smart they were. It’s amazing how far a little insincere flattery will go.
On the other side of the coin are those who used the pressure against them to push them deeper into God. They became strong and did exploits. Out of their ranks came the Maccabees. The Maccabees delivered the Jewish people from the power of the fraudulent flatterer and restored the Temple of God and true worship. From their legacy comes Hanukah, also known as the Feast of Dedication. (See John 10:22).
Beloved we are living in a world today that is full of evil flattery. We tend to gravitate toward the lie. Satan told Adam and Eve that God was holding out on them. They believed him and acted in disobedience against God because of it. Their situation proves that, “those who do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt with flattery.” Because of their action now every human is born with a corrupt nature. Romans 5:12 hits the nail on the head. It says “therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned”. There is no escape from the flattering corruption of evil without God’s help. “We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.” (1 John 5:19).
Why was it so difficult for so many of us to come to Christ? Because we were under the sway of the wicked one. We believed for too long his whispers saying, “you are smarter than this,” “the Bible can’t be true,” “there is no hell,” “you can do it later,” “it will cost you too much,” “you won’t have any more fun.” On and on goes the lies and tightly, tightly and for to long, so many hold on to them.
I am probably not writing to many unbelievers today, but to people who have found Christ. May I encourage you to keep your mind and heart full of the Word of God? God says for a reason that we need to be “transformed by the renewing of our mind.” (See Romans 12:2). He says for a reason that “man does not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” (See Matthew 4:4) Parents, Proverbs 22:15 says “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child…” Don’t send them into the world without having instilled into them the word of God. I’m thinking Daniel’s parents did it right. When he found himself in an antibiblical world that opposed what he believed, the truth they invested into him prevailed. The flattery of the evil one couldn’t sway to him. You and your children deserve the same.
