Daniel was taken captive in a foreign land, to be used as another man’s tool. But God had other plans, Daniel was instead used as an instrument for the declaring of God’s supremacy! One of the keys to Daniel’s success was his resolve. We read in Daniel 1:8 “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.” Daniel made the decision to observe His Hebrew customs and not partake in the delicacies of the king’s table, which was not really a choice at all but rather a command to eat his food and drink his wine.
The way Daniel handled himself is admirable. He requested of his supervisor, he did not demand or belittle or degrade what was before him. He made his decision and requested permission to go forward with it. Daniel controlled himself in the situation. He even suggested being tested! He asked for time to eat according to his custom and then allow the supervisor to decide what was best. We can learn so much from Daniel and how to behave in situations we face. Every day we have opportunity to react to the environment around us. Social media is one emotionally charged example that can pull us in to debating and fighting. Rather than react may we behave like Daniel and control ourselves and even test the information we see, look for truth or deception in it.
Daniel and his friends behaved with resolve and integrity. They made up their minds and had hearts that were steadfast toward what they knew was right. Because of this they gained the favor of the king and were appointed to a position serving him. Daniel 1:20 “In all matters requiring wisdom and balanced judgement, the king found the advice of these young men to be ten times better than that of all the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.”
May we behave like Daniel, with resolve, integrity and with prayer as our go to method of handling the situations in our daily lives. As Christians we have the advantage of seeking the Lord for His wisdom in every area that concerns us and we can receive answers from Him. In this critical time for our country I encourage you to seek godly wisdom in the selection of candidates for public office as well as pray for them. 1 Timothy 2:1 “First of all, I ask you to pray for everyone. Ask God to help and bless them all, and tell God how thankful you are for each of them. 2 Pray for kings and others in power, so that we may live quiet and peaceful lives as we worship and honor God. 2 This kind of prayer is good, and it pleases God our Savior.”
Here are some important areas to give attention to… prayer for the upcoming elections, for those currently in office and those that will be elected. Pray for our nation that there would be a spiritual revival and awakening to the Lord. Pray for the Lord to give you wisdom and discretion in handling every situation like he did for Daniel. Sharing the truth we know, with the people we know.
