Believing God and striking the match!
by Pastor Doug Cox
Last Sunday morning the Lord moved on my heart in a special way during one of our worship songs. We were singing about how our Lord is a “way maker,” a “miracle worker” and “promise keeper.” During that song it came to mind how our nation is caught in conflict between two opposing forces. Sadly, many are being swept away by the forces of deception.
I think we all know that deception is rampant (DIR) when a candidate for the Supreme Court can’t define what a woman is. We know DIR when news outlets have been reduced to being talking heads for political and corporate agendas and cancel culture eliminates those who don’t comply. And DIR when our public education system is not so much interested in helping kids understand the simple ABC’s, as they are the LGBTQ+’s. There are many more casualties in society when deception is rampant and to me it is discouraging. Yet hope is flickering. In the church lives are being changed and kids are excited about Jesus and not only that, more than one college campus is experiencing revival and spiritual awakening. That should cause our hearts to rejoice.
I remember being out in the hills as a kid with a friend. We were wet and cold and needed to start a fire. I remember we had a few matches, but one by one the wind caught them and snuffed them out, or our cold wet fingers ruined them before striking. Each of us gave several tries, thinking we could do better than the other. Match after match went out and the matches dwindled. Finally on the last match desperation took over. We decided to work together, so we put our backs to the wind, our shoulders together, stacked the kindling perfectly and used our coats as a windbreak. It was a joyful thing to see that last match light and its flame take hold.
With that in mind, I’m wondering what could happen if each of us partnered up with someone else to strike some matches of intersession and prayer for people around us. What if we went deliberately together to the Lord, our way maker, our promise keeper and miracle worker and ask Him to touch them and light a fire in their hearts. I’m asking you to share this article with someone you would like to partner with and make a commitment together to take a few minutes each day to pray together for the church, the kids, marriages, the lost and for whatever the Lord leads you to pray for, and who knows? Maybe we could have a revival of our own. Think of the warmth and joy that will bring into your hearts.
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:9-10)
