Check Your Blind Spot
by Rebekah Harvey
The past few weeks observing and celebrating the events of the Passover, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus have given us plenty to think about. As I was looking over my notes from the messages, one of the points made on Palm Sunday was asking the Lord to help us see our spiritual blind spots. If you have driven a car you should be cautious to check your blind spots. If a driver tries to make a lane change and doesn’t realize there is another vehicle in his blind spot he could cause an accident. This can be related to spiritual matters as well.
Merriam Webster defines a blind spot as “the small circular area at the back of the retina where the optic nerve enters the eyeball and which is devoid of rods and cones and is not sensitive to light” and “an area in which one fails to exercise judgment or discrimination”. All of us can have areas in our lives that we are not sensitive to the Lord, or that we fail to exercise judgment or discrimination. But don’t let this be a discouragement to you. As believers in Jesus, becoming His disciples is a process. As we have said many times, when a child is learning to walk and falls down we don’t punish them for learning the process.
Luke 19:9 “And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 “for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” As believers in Jesus we can rejoice that we have received salvation, and that salvation is being worked out in us. Just as children grow, learn, walk, run, and even fall along the way and achievements are celebrated by their parents, we have a loving Father that watches over us in all our seasons of life and He wants us to turn to Him for direction and guidance every day.
As a good Father He will show us where our blind spots are. You might be thinking I have never had the Lord show me anything like that before, I encourage you to open His Word and ask Him to speak to you.
Ephesians 3:14 “When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. 16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. 20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.”
Lord, help me to see the areas that I have been spiritually blind and need your help to change, please show me areas in my life that are lost and turn to You for direction.
