Don’t Cut Corners
By Pastor Doug Cox
I check the washer fluid level in the car regularly. If it is getting low, I fill it up with windshield washer fluid. Makes sense right? Why even talk about it? Because I remember many years ago the family had to go out of town and it was during a time when we needed to make every penny count. We didn’t use credit cards. So, I checked the oil and washer fluid before leaving and found the washer fluid was low and I filled it up with water thinking I could get by.
It turns out that day it snowed hard but that didn’t pose a problem because the snow coming on the windshield wiped away. However, on the way home that night the temperature dropped below freezing and the salt water on the road didn’t freeze. As cars passed it the slimy water splashed up on the window. All it did was smear when I tried to use the wipers. The water for the wipers had frozen and left me struggling to see where I was going on bad roads. Thankfully we made it home safe after sticking my head out the window a few times to see. I will never cut a corner like that again.
This experience came to mind when sitting in a Simple Truth’s Bible study a couple of weeks ago. Part of our ministry here at Crossroads is to try to encourage people to fill their hearts with the Word of God. Doing that is vital to a healthy spiritual life and your walk with the Lord. Nothing can be substituted for God’s Word.
· Psalm 119:11 – “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.”
· Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
· Psalm 119:130 – “The entrance of Your words gives light. It gives understanding to the simple.”
· Psalm 107:20 – “He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
· Proverbs 4: 20-23 – “My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.”
· John 15:3 – “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.”
· Matthew 4:4 NKJV – “But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
· Matthew 8:16 – “When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.”
· John 6:63 – “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
· 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “All Scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
