Feeding our faith!
By Pastor Doug
Because we’re living in a time of heightened spiritual warfare, we need to make sure we are maintaining our spiritual foundation. The foundation of a house isn’t beautiful to look at but it is vitally important to keeping the house sitting on it functional. A foundation that sinks or cracks will cause doors to jam, windows to break, unwanted drafts and so on. The same applies in the spiritual realm. We are called to be strong in the Lord and the power of His might. Psalm 11:3 says “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (NKJV)
Our foundation as a Christian is faith. It is not just faith in anything but faith in the Lord and His gospel. The Old Testament prophet Habakkuk said this, “Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him but the just shall live by his faith.” (Hab 2:4 NKJV) Paul echoes those words in Romans 1:17 saying “For in it (referring to the gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith as it is written, the just shall live by faith.”
So our ‘faith journey’ begins by receiving Christ. “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26 NKJV) When we receive Jesus as Lord and give our life to Him, we are born again. (See John 3:3 and John 1:12) The apostle Peter recognized our meager beginnings as babes in Christ by encouraging us “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.” (1 Peter 2:2 NKJV) You don’t have to wonder why a baby has chubby cheeks, because you know they came from nursing their mother’s breast. Likewise, every newborn Chrisitan must nurse on the breast of God’s Word to grow spiritually.
When standing against the tempter Jesus gave us the source of His strength, the Word of God. He overcame each temptation with “what is written.” In Matthew 4:4 He answered the tempter with “…It is written, ‘man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” (NKJV) A prideful Christian would falsely assume they don’t need to be in the Word of God consistently. Jesus says we do, it is our daily bread.
In Romans 10:17 Paul instructs us saying “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (NKJV) So the question is ‘how much of what’ are we absorbing? To constantly be taking in worldly views and entertainment etc. and spending little time feeding your spirit will serve only to weaken yourself spiritually and give the enemy of our soul advantage. If you’re constantly spending time listening to things that feed the flesh, don’t expect to have strong faith. And it’s not that you are not a Christian, you will just be a weak Christian.
So to feed our faith we need to be in the Word. Something else we can do is share the Word, we can share the gospel. One day Jesus sent His disciples off to go get food. He stayed behind at a well where He witnessed to a woman about Himself. When the disciples arrived with food they encouraged Him to eat but He said to them “…My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” Did you catch that. Jesus was strengthened by sharing the gospel.
So be in God’s Word, share the gospel and you will feed your faith and “…this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.” (1John 5:4 NKJV)
