Was Jack Nicolson Right?
By Doug Cox
In the movie “A Few Good Men” Jack Nicholson while being cross examined by a feisty lawyer responded with the famous line “you can’t handle the truth,” then went on to expose his own involvement in a soldier’s death. Truth sometimes can be hard to handle especially when it reveals that a person is out of line with God.
Knowing truth is to be a main priority of every disciple of Jesus as well as those seeking Him. Truth is as important to the believer as blood is to the human heart. In John 8:32 Jesus says, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” In John 14:6 He boldly proclaimed “I am the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6 NKJV) Notice He said He is the way not a way.
No doubt His stance seems narrow-minded in our world full of spiritual competitors offering their various ways to obtain eternal security. But the question is, are their ways legitimate? The answer is yes but only if what Jesus said is a lie.
If Jesus had lied before His death on the cross, death would have had power to hold Him because “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) Justice demands, if that’s true for us, it’s also true for Him. Therefore, if Jesus were a lying sinner His claims would be no different than anyone else making them, but He’s not. Jesus told the truth, and His Resurrection proves it, meaning His exclusive claim and power of being the only way to the Father was validated by God.
Exclusivity is out of fashion in our postmodern world of pluralism where all truth claims are declared valid. However, claims are not what qualify truth. For example, if you were to accept a seemingly credible person’s offer to go to the moon, then upon arrival at the launch site you find a boat, a car and a rocket and are then told, any one of them will take you to the moon. It’s your choice. It’s what you want to believe. Obviously, their claim doesn’t define what is true. There is nothing to back it up.
Today the masses are told there are many ways to get eternal life but only one way to the moon. Why is it many can handle the truth about the moon, but not the truth that only Jesus can get individuals into heaven with the Father? One possible answer is that many don’t believe in the Resurrection of Jesus or don’t properly understand what it means.
The Resurrection is what verifies everything in Christianity. The apostle Paul says, “…if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.” … “…and if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins,” “… and those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.” And “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.” (See 1 Corinthians 15:13, 17-19 NKJV)
Friends, the Resurrection of Jesus is God’s stamp of approval and confirmation to the world that everything He said is true. He said, “He is the gate of the sheep and will save those who enter by Him.” and that “He is the Resurrection and the life.” (John 10:9;11:25). His Resurrection is proof His words are true and so that’s the truth according to God’s Holy Bible, and I hope Jack Nicolson is wrong about you.
